Uplifting Women in Aviation

Nia Gilliam is a trailblazer in aviation, not only for her achievements as a pilot but also for her commitment to increasing diversity in the flight deck. In 2016, she co‑founded Sisters of the Skies Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting future Black aviators through scholarships, mentorship, and outreach.

Since then, SOS has awarded over $1 million in flight training scholarships, built a network of more than 130 Black female pilots, and introduced hundreds of girls of color to aviation through its signature outreach event, Girls Rock Wings.

Diversifying the skies

The organization’s impact has been recognized on platforms like Good Morning America, The Kelly Clarkson Show, Bloomberg, CBS Chicago, Essence, and Black Enterprise. In 2023, Sisters of the Skies received the prestigious Clifford Henderson Trophy from the National Aeronautic Association for its leadership in diversifying aviation—and continues to expand is impact through strategic sponsorships and direct support from aviation leaders such as United, American, Delta, and Boeing.

Walk with us to end breast cancer

In 2023, Nia participated in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day in Chicago—a 60-mile walk over three days to raise money for breast cancer research and awareness. As a survivor, it was one of the most meaningful experiences of her life, walking alongside fellow survivors, supporters, and loved ones affected by the disease. Each step was a tribute, and every dollar raised helped bring the cause closer to a cure. Nia continues to take part in these walks, proudly raising funds to support life-saving research and those still in the fight.
